Several astronomical events including supermoon and meteor showers are expected in November, according to state weather bureau PAGASA.
In an update, PAGASA said the Full Moon at Perigee or Supermoon is expected on November 5.
“If you love observing the Moon, another fascinating astronomical event to anticipate this month is the Full Moon at Perigee, commonly referred to as Supermoon,” PAGASA said.
“On November 5, 2025, the moon reaches its full phase, and it is at the closest point in its orbit to the Earth. It may appear up to 7% larger and 15% brighter than an average full moon,” it added.
The Leonid meteor shower will be active starting November 6 and will reach its peak on November 17, according to PAGASA.
“The major event is the Leonid meteor shower, which is active from November 6 to November 30, with its peak activity on November 17. It occurs when the Earth passes through the debris left by Comet Tempel-Tuttle,” PAAGSA said.
“Its radiant, the constellation Leo, will rise above the northeastern horizon at midnight. Therefore, this shower will be best observed until sunrise,” it added.
The major meteor shower will have 15 meteors per hour under moonless dark skies, PAGASA said. The number of visible meteors increases as the radiant ascends to its highest point in the sky around 5 a.m.
During the peak of the Leonid meteor shower on November 17, the waning crescent moon will rise after 4 a. m offering ideal observing conditions of Leonids from midnight until dawn, according to PAGASA.
Meanwhile, the Northern Taurid meteor shower, which is active from October 20 to December 10, will reach its peak on November 12, PAGASA said.
Around five meteors per hour will be observed.
“Its radiant, the constellation Taurus, will appear above the east northeastern horizon around 7 p. m. on the night of November 11 and will reach its highest position in the sky at midnight,” PAGASAs said.
“Since the moon will be in its third quarter phase, its brightness may interfere once it rises in the east northeast at around 11:13 p.m.,” it added.
