MANILA — Globe said it has completed a landmark demonstration of 5G millimeter wave (mmWave) technology in the Philippines, achieving fiber-grade wireless speeds of up to 4.3 Gbps using Nokia’s tech in field trials conducted in Zamboanga City.
The tests, which used Nokia’s Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) solution paired with Wi-Fi 7, showcased how mmWave can deliver ultra-fast connectivity without relying on physical fiber cables.
Globe said the breakthrough is a major step toward next-generation broadband capable of supporting critical operations, boosting enterprise productivity, and improving high-speed internet access for households.
In a series of trials, Globe recorded 4.3 Gbps at a distance of 2.1 kilometers from its site at the Marine Battalion Landing Team-1 headquarters in Naval Station Rio Hondo. Even at nearly 9 kilometers away, speeds remained close to 1 Gbps—performance that Globe said demonstrates the technology’s resilience across challenging terrain.
The Philippine Marines became the first users of the system, adopting Globe’s 5G mmWave to bolster mission-critical communications.
“We are grateful to Globe, our long-time partner, for continuously supporting the Marine Battalion Landing Team-1 with reliable communications solutions,” said Lt. Col. Nepthalie C. Papa, Commanding Officer of Marine Battalion Landing Team-1, Philippine Marines.
Globe said it has begun activating 5G mmWave sites in Zamboanga City, Quezon City, and Rizal, with broader deployment expected as device support expands.
